Project Background
In this project, children are learning about the physics and the geometry of buildings and structures, and investigating a variety of building materials. They explore structures in their immediate surroundings, as well as structures in distant places and from long ago. They design and test strong structures over multiple sessions, and learn to persevere through difficulties and frustration, just as scientists and engineers do every day. The activities suggested below give everyone in the family a chance to learn about and marvel at the buildings and structures in the neighborhood and around the city.
Activities to Try
Noticing Structures All Around
Encourage your child to notice buildings and structures all around them (houses, buildings, bridges, statues, etc.). Then have them draw a picture or take a photograph of any they find interesting. Also talk with your child about the buildings and structures they see all around them, including their sizes, what materials they are made of, what shapes they include, and anything else that seems interesting to your or your child.
