School Year 2019-20
During this project, Kindergarten children will identify a small area on school grounds to observe and study intensively in the fall and then continue to monitor over the course of the school year. PreK children will focus on observing and monitoring a single tree over the course of the year. Several of the project activities take place outside in the identified space; and many others involve bringing artifacts from the space indoors for investigation. Throughout the project, children keep records in their own “My School Backyard” or “My Class Tree” Journals.
The primary goal of this project is to help children begin to see themselves as scientists and to see their own familiar surroundings – literally their own school backyards – as places where they can do interesting and meaningful inquiry and learning. The project also engages children in studying one site over an extended period time, which helps them see and describe change and also builds their ability to sustain attention over time.

Fall STEM Project: Our School Backyard/Our Class Tree
Summer Camp
This week at camp, we are learning about buildings and structures - what makes them strong, what shapes they're made of, and how we can construct strong structures ourselves. We will also play a variety of math games and activities, focusing on learning about shapes and shape parts. Pictures and videos of our fun are below! Try some activities at home, inspired by our second week of camp!
Week 5: Strong Structures
|
This week at camp, we are learning about materials for creating strong structures and walls. We are experimenting with creating mortar out of various materials to see which works best! We are also doing lots of math activities, learning about shape families. For example, what makes all triangles the same, even if they look very different? Pictures and videos of our fun are coming soon! Try some activities at home, inspired by our third week of camp!
