Young Children's STEM Learning Starts at Home
Children's science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning begins and ends at home. Even very young children wonder about the world around them, engineer solutions to their problems, and make sense of their surroundings in logical, mathematical ways. Your interactions with them at this age can help foster excitement and engagement in STEM. The activities we suggest here will help develop children's STEM thinking and learning during engaging, age-appropriate activities and during everyday interactions. Although the activities are listed by week, they can be done in any order, and you can choose the ones that interest your family.
You don't need to be a STEM expert to support your child's STEM explorations! Be a STEM learner alongside your child - your example will teach them how to make new discoveries, learn new things, and persevere through difficult new challenges.
These activities are meant to jumpstart your own and your children's creativity. If you try other STEM activities at home and want to share them on this site, contact us! We also invite you to join our UChicago Ready, Set, STEM facebook group to share pictures, drawings, or other artifacts from your experiences!
